The clearest pattern is uncertainty about the first step.

In the onboarding study, users weren’t sure what to do after creating their workspace.[1]
Support conversations echo this: “I’ve signed up. What should I set up first?”[2]

I’d test a guided first task with new users to see what helps them reach their first useful result.

What should we improve to keep more users?

Remove extra setup steps so new users reach value sooner. Participants lost momentum when asked for details they didn’t need yet. Keep the essentials first and let them finish the rest later.

Make email sign-in codes the default. Participants found a one-time code easier than creating and remembering a password. Explain where to find the code so sign-in feels straightforward.

Guide people through one useful task before asking them to invite their team. A clear first success helps them see why to return. Introduce team invites after they’ve experienced that value.
